Product Description
Red light-emitting diodes in a standard 5-mm package are suitable for visual indicators, display arrays, and simple optical signaling applications. The light-emitting layer of the semiconductor generates red light in the wavelength range of 620–625 nm, which the eye can still clearly perceive even under unfavorable lighting conditions.
With a typical current of 20 mA per LED, the forward voltage is approximately 2 V. Therefore, a series resistor is included in the circuit to protect the power source from overload; the required value depends on the operating voltage of the entire system. The LEDs can be combined in series, parallel, or mixed configurations, depending on the desired brightness distribution and current consumption.
In projects using microcontroller boards, red LEDs are used to create status indicators for operating states, numerical or graphical display arrays using multiplexing technology, and visual warning signals. Test setups use red LEDs for visual fault diagnosis. Simple transistor driver modules can also meet higher luminous intensity requirements.
At the same time, the average service life is 100,000 operating hours, meaning the LED remains cost-effective even during continuous operation. The light-emitting diodes are supplied in bulk, without special sorting or wiring, which is why inventory management is advisable for larger assembly tasks.
Safety Notice
Red LEDs are used exclusively for prototyping, testing, and development purposes. They are not approved for installation in residential electrical circuits or in safety warning and signaling systems where specific approvals are required. During continuous operation at high current densities, monitor heat generation and, if necessary, provide cooling or reduce the current.
