This version of the QRE1113 breakout board features a user-friendly analog output that varies depending on the amount of IR light reflected back to the sensor. This tiny board is suitable for line sensing applications and can be used in both 3.3V and 5V systems.
The board's IR reflection sensor consists of two parts - an IR-emitting LED and an IR-sensitive phototransistor. When you apply power to the VCC and GND pins, the IR LED in the sensor lights up. A 100 Ω resistor is integrated and connected in series with the LED to limit the current. A 10 kΩ resistor pulls the output pin up, but when the light from the LED is reflected back onto the phototransistor, the output starts to drop. The more IR light is detected by the phototransistor, the lower the output voltage of the breakout board.
These sensors are often used in robots that follow lines. White surfaces reflect much more light than black surfaces. So when they are pointed at a white surface, the output voltage is lower than on a black surface.
The current input and analog output pins are routed to a 3-pin header with a 0.1 inch pitch. The board also has a single mounting hole in case you want to screw the board to something.
