For switches and pushbuttons, the abbreviations "NO" and "NC" stand for "Normally Open" and "Normally Closed". These terms describe the electrical status of a switch in its rest position, i.e. when it is not actuated.
Push-buttons and switches can also have both options, i.e. NO and NC. The two designations are then located on different contacts. As a rule, there is also a third contact, which is often labeled with the letter "C". "C" stands for "Common", i.e. the common contact.
In this case, the voltage input is connected to "C". As long as the button is not pressed or actuated, the current is forwarded to the "NC" contact. No voltage is applied to the "NO" contact. As soon as the button is pressed, the current is forwarded to "NO" and no voltage is applied to "NC".
NO (normally open)
An NO switch is open in its rest position, which means that the circuit is interrupted, i.e. open, when the switch is not actuated.
When the switch is actuated, it closes the circuit and allows electric current to flow.
NC (Normally Closed)
An NC switch is closed in its rest position, which means that the circuit is closed and electric current can flow when the switch is not actuated.
When the switch is actuated, it opens the circuit and interrupts the flow of electric current.
The choice between NO and NC depends on the specific application and the requirements of the switch in the circuit. Depending on whether the pushbutton or switch is to open or close a circuit, either an NO switch or NC switch is required. Switches with both options (NO and NC) can therefore be used more flexibly.
