What is a PIR sensor?

A passive infrared sensor is an electronic sensor that measures infrared light emitted by objects in its field of view. They are most commonly used in PIR-based motion detectors. PIR sensors are often used in security alarms and automatic lighting applications.

How does the PIR sensor work?

The PIR sensor has 2 slits and the slits are made of sensitive material. When the sensor is inactive, both slots detect the same amount of IR. The ambient radiation radiates from outside, from walls or rooms, etc. When a human body or an animal passes by, it detects the first slot of the PIR sensor. This results in a positive differential change between the two bisectors. However, when the body leaves the detection area, the sensor generates a negative differential change between the two bisectors.
