Hands-on switching logic - digital technology at school with the logic board
In computer science lessons, logic circuits are usually simulated in simulation programs such as LoCAD or Logisim. A real setup is often not used, as ready-made experimental boards are often expensive to purchase and it is difficult for students to handle the assembly of the circuits from individual components. The logic board provides learners with a haptic approach to the topic of switching logic and enables them to build a bridge to the underlying physics - at an affordable price.
As the inputs and outputs of the soldered ICs are labeled and the power supply is hard-wired, the board can also be used by inexperienced learners. It is powered by a CR2032 button cell battery, which is easily and inexpensively available.
note: The twisted precision sockets only work with jumper cables with round pins.
Functions and possible circuits with the logic board
The following functions are available to students on the board:
- 4 slide switches for input
- 4 LEDs for output
- 4 AND gates
- 4 OR gates
- 4 XOR gates
- 4 inverters
The logic elements included are selected in such a way that many different circuits can be constructed. These include the following, for example:
- 4 half adders or
- 2 full adders or
- 4 RS flip-flops
As the boards can be interconnected, it is also possible to design more complex circuits or, for example, to interconnect full adders built by students to form a carry ripple adder
