The accurate Pi RTC module is based on the DS3231 clock chip. The DS3231 is a cost-effective, extremely accurate I2C real-time clock (RTC). It provides the time for the Raspberry Pi via the I2C interface. With the TCXO (temperature compensated crystal oscillator), the RTC maintains information about seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month and year. The date at the end of the month is automatically adjusted for months with less than 31 days, including corrections for leap years. The watch can be operated in either 24-hour or 12-hour format with an AM/PM indicator. The clock offers two programmable daily alarms and a programmable square wave output. The INT/SQW pin will either generate an interrupt due to an alarm condition or output a square wave signal, with the selection controlled by the INTCN bit.
If you want to keep the time information even when the Raspberry Pi is turned off, you need to insert a 3V CR1225 lithium cell into the battery holder.
